If you don't know what's coming, you can't plan ahead.  Nobody really likes surprises, and the future is just chock full of the damn things - unless you watch what is happening now, and what trends are growing or declining, something is going to bite you when yu least expect, and you won't even see it coming.  Most people spend way too much time watching their back, and trip over things that are right in front of them.
