Global Issues

How do we know what the real Global Issues are?

The usual media are not very useful when it comes to identifying and understanding the big issues facing the world as a whole. National media are good at reporting things from their national point of view. Specialist media are good at reporting within the context of their interests. Analysts are good at analyzing whatever is in the range of their analytical expertise. Very few sources can provide information on what is real and what is media spin - what is an issue and what is a red herring.

In this section I am trying to provide today's news on the real global issues. Forget interest rates and look at the whole credit and financial picture...  forget anthropogenic global warming and look into the requirements of energy security...  forget believing what is written and learn to look behind the spin.  I am trying to find the best ways to make relevant information available on a daily basis.  If you have any thoughts please email me at USI or use the guestbook under About USI, above.

  • Coded Messages to Buy More Gold

Bloomberg.com had the headline ?Bank of Korea ?Under Pressure? to Boost Gold Holdings, Shinhan?s Oh Says,? which was perfectly understandable, although I have no idea what ?Shinhan?s Oh Says? means. I suspect that Shinhan is some guy who just found out that purposely not buying gold is a really stupid idea, and who, upon realization [...]

  • ?Obvious? US Bonds Junk? Considering Key Ratios, Future Outlook

It?s the burning question that can?t be denied — do US bonds make sense with the current triple-A rating and low yield? Or, is “quite obvious” they instead deserve a junk rating? Of course, China-based Dagong Credit Rating Agency has already argued vehemently the US should have a lower rating, in particular lower than China. [...]

  • Can Gold Go Higher?

I?ve done a number of interviews on gold recently and the number one question I get most from reporters is?can gold prices go higher? My answer is yes. Short-term, ?record gold prices? are a bit of a misnomer. On an inflation-adjusted basis, gold?s real record price would be over $2,300 an ounce. Looking at our [...]

Ellen Kelleher, writing for The Financial Times, opens her article with how Baird & Co., in their warehouses in London, purify gold by heating it to molten form to make ?medallions, bars, and rings,? which sounds like a lot of heavy, hot, back-breaking, dangerous work to me, as if the word ?work? was not bad [...]

Japan was the world?s most admired economy in the ?80s. Then it was the world?s most despised economy in the ?90s. The stakes just got higher in the 3-D chess game China?s playing for natural resources. On one dimension, the Middle Kingdom is on the offensive. It was a ping-pong day for the currencies, back and forth over the net… The net being the ?level of the day?… For instance, the Aussie dollar (AUD) played over the 91-cent net all day, and the euro played over the 1.2820 level all day. The data on Thursday was all over the board, which [...]
