Ancient Urbs & Cultural History
uwj-ancient

In understanding the present, it is important to understand where we have come from, and the processes that lead to our present ways of life. It is too easy to judge the past (and the future) by what we think now. It is harder, and more relevant, to understand the past in the context of the thinking of that time. This section should help in understanding our common urban roots and cultures.

URBAN HISTORY: Expatica: Long-running road works on the M-30 motorway around the capital have led archaeologists to discover Madrid is older than first thought. Nile releases city's deep history Print E-mail

EGYPTSource:   New Scientist:  "Sure, (Alexander) conquered most of the world known to the ancient Greeks, but he didn't found the Egyptian city of Alexandria - he just rebranded it. It now seems that this part of the Nile has been settled for at least 4500 years, pre-dating Alexander's arrival by a good two millennia."  Read more…

Comment:  Makes one wonder just who started Alexandria.  An interesting theory is that the Grooved Ware People from western Europe colonized the Mediterranean well before the rise of both Egypt and Sumeria.  Is a major rewrite of history in the wind?

Mohenjo-daro Print E-mail

URBAN HISTORY:  Source:  Internet Scout Report:  "The ancient urban world is becoming better known through the work of dedicated scholars and numerous other passionate individuals. This website offers an interesting and compelling look inside Mohenjo-daro (“Mound of the Dead”), a city that is located in the Indus Valley in Pakistan."  READ MORE…

COMMENT:  Mohenjo-Daro is recorded as one of the oldest human cities.  However, some recent research indicates that the Grooved-ware People of Western Europe may have preceded them at sites like Stonehenge and New Grange, and that these people may have even colonized the eastern Mediterranean coast  providing the basis for the Egyptian and Sumerian civilizations that later flourished there.  Start a topic in the Urban World Forum if this interests you.
